The 4 Areas of Small Business Chaos and How to Fix Them
Being a small business owner is tough. Not only do you have to wear many hats, but you also have to make many decisions—some of which can make or break your business. It’s no wonder that so many small businesses are in a state of chaos. What’s even more surprising is that this chaos is often the result of 4 areas that have not yet been mastered or even understood by the business owner: Destination Mastery, Time Mastery, Money Mastery, and Delivery Mastery. Let’s take a look at each of these areas in turn and explore how you can fix them.
Destination Mastery:
A lack of clarity regarding their personal and professional goals is one of the main reasons small business owners find themselves in a state of chaos. If you don’t know where you’re going, it’s impossible to map out a route to get there. That’s why taking the time to sit down and figure out your personal and professional goals is important. Once you know what you want to achieve, you can start making the right decisions for your business.
Time Mastery:
Another reason small businesses are in chaos is that they cannot determine the highest value tasks instead of fighting fires. This is usually the result of not having systems and processes in place to help prioritize tasks. As a result, business owners end up spending their time on things that don’t really matter instead of the things that will move their business forward. To fix this, take the time to assess all of the tasks that need to be done and create a system for prioritizing them. This will help you focus on the things that are most important and make better use of your time.
Money Mastery:
One of the biggest reasons small businesses fail is their inability to manage money or make appropriate financial decisions. This is often the result of not understanding the three financial scorecards — profit & loss, balance sheet, and cash flow statement — or not having adequate financial controls in place. If you want to get your finances under control, it’s important to learn how to read and understand these financial statements. You should also put systems and processes in place to help you make better financial decisions for your business.
Delivery Mastery:
The final reason small businesses are in chaos is that they cannot deliver reliable services and products for every stakeholder — including themselves. This usually stems from not having systems and processes to ensure quality control. As a result, business owners end up delivering subpar products and services, which leads to dissatisfied customers and more work for the business owner in the long run. To fix this, implement systems and processes to ensure quality control at every product development and delivery stage. This will help you ensure that only high-quality products and services reach your customers.
If your small business is in a state of chaos, it’s likely due to one (or more) of these four areas: Destination Mastery, Time Mastery, Money Mastery, or Delivery Mastery. By taking the time to understand these areas and putting systems and processes in place, you can get your business back on track and avoid future chaos down the road.
